I couldn't control all of the toxins that permeate the world that we live in. But if there was something I could do to prevent my children from developing cancer, even something as simple as changing my cleaning products, I was going to do it. So I did.

When the news surfaced about lead in toys, I embarked on months of intense research. My findings prompted me to start using safe plastics, soaps and cosmetics - and ultimately - cleaning products.

I learned that many of the ingredients used in the most popular cleaning products were toxic. When I examined the cleaning products in my house, to my surprise, the list of ingredients were not included on the labels. I perused company websites and even called them for answers.

I was shocked to discover that I had been cleaning my home, my babies' toys, and my dishes with neurotoxic chemicals, reproductive toxins, and even carcinogens.

I immediately switched to "green, natural" products, only to find out later that those products were not safe, either. How could I keep my house clean without putting my family's health in danger? I researched every cleaning product I could find. I spent hours mixing organic oils, soaps, and other safe ingredients. I cleaned every surface of my home for months until I created a safe product that worked well. The result: my popular All-Purpose Cleaner.

All of my products were created after careful consultation with chemists and the Environmental Protection Agency to guarantee that they were both effective and environmentally responsible.

Educating people on the dangers of common household cleaning products has become my goal.

Did you know that since World War II at least 72,000 new chemicals have been developed? Less than 2% of synthetic chemicals have been tested in regards to toxicity in humans. Chemicals in household cleaners have been linked to, among other things, allergies, asthma, cancer, birth defects, and psychological abnormalities.

Pound for pound, children breathe greater concentrations and are at a greater risk to be exposed to toxins. Since their bodies are still developing, exposure to toxins can do maximum damage.

Asthma - Since 1980 asthma has increased by 600%. The most common air pollutants can cause or contribute to asthma. Asthma is the leading cause of hospital admissions in children.

Cancer - Toxic chemicals in household cleaners are 3 times more likely to cause cancer than outdoor air. There has been a 26% increase in cancer over the last two decades. Cancer is the number one cause of death in children. One in every 400 Americans can expect to get cancer before the age of 15. Scientists believe that 80-90% of cancer is due to environmental causes.

Women who work at home have a 54% higher death rate from cancer than those who work away from home. The 15-year study concluded it was as a direct result of the much higher exposure rate to toxic chemicals in common household products.

Birth Defects - Some chemicals in common household cleaners have been associated with reproductive harm. Some examples are decreases in fertility, cancers of reproductive organs, premature birth, abnormalities and birth defects.

One third of the substances used in the fragrance industry are toxic, but companies are not required to list their ingredients as long as they use the term "fragrance". Only 1% of toxins are required to be listed on labels because companies can claim that they are "trade secrets".
