Kevin Rudd, Australia’s newly elected Prime Minister, has ratified the Kyoto Protocol. In doing so, Australia joins the growing list of countries getting serious about climate change. It’s refreshing to see a newly elected Government act on its election commitments as early as the Rudd Government has. And things are looking up for Australia’s organic industry too. The Rudd Labor Government has announced plans to fund changes to the way Australia’s organic certification system works. Finally it appears as though Australia’s burgeoning organic industry and the consumers it serves will benefit from a uniform domestic organic standard. Good news indeed!
OK - so am I allowed to say that it is about bloody time!!!!!!!
How long have we Australian’s had to wait for a domestic standard for organics? Many other countries moved on this a long time ago. Why is it that Australia has lagged behind the rest of the world with its domestic organic standards and in ratifying globally accepted protocols to protect the future of the planet?
I agree with Jim on both issues - about bloody time!
ditto
Australia has been held back by the vested self-interest of its certifying bodies. I reckon we’re well behind many other countries. This has ruined many potential exporters from establishing themselves in key markets. So bringing in some clear direction will be very welcome amongst both growers and processors.
How does this impact the BFA versus NASAA/OFA stoush? Hopefully this’ll help them to pull their heads in.
